What Does 3 Years in Business Really Feel Like?

Three years ago, I made a deliberate decision. I stepped away from a senior management role in a corporate environment and launched VASwoosh®. It is my own strategic operational consultancy. I did not leave because I failed or felt stuck. I left because I wanted more control, more intention and a more direct impact on how businesses are run.
At the time, I imagined freedom, flexibility and a life that aligned more closely with my goals. What I discovered is that running your own business for three years is not just about working from home or wearing casual clothes. It is about responsibility, strategy and constant decision making.

The freedom to lead on your own terms

In my corporate role, I led teams, managed operations and worked closely with senior stakeholders. I was not in a junior position. I was in a leadership role. But I was still constrained by structure, hierarchy and organisational priorities that did not always match my own. Building VASwoosh® allowed me to choose how I lead, who I work with and what kind of impact I create. I no longer report to a manager. I answer to my own standards and my clients’ goals. I can design my own schedule, plan my own priorities and say no to projects that do not serve my long term vision. That freedom is not about running away from structure. It is about choosing the structure that serves me best.
The shift from managing a team to owning the business.
In a corporate environment, most areas of the business are managed by someone else. Operations, finance, marketing, customer service and strategy each have their own department or leadership role. When you run your own business, all of that responsibility lands on your shoulders, even if you work with a strong support network.
I may have partners, tools and systems around me, but I am still the one making the final decisions. The strategy, the boundaries, the priorities and the direction of VASwoosh® all come back to me. That is energising, but it is also intense. Every day feels like a strategic move, not just a routine task.

The mental load that never really stops

One of the most honest things about being in business for three years is that your brain rarely switches off. In a corporate role, even in a senior position, you can often close your laptop at the end of the day and leave work behind. When you run your own business, ideas and decisions follow you past the working hours.
Some of my sharpest ideas arrive when I am not at my desk. They come when I am walking, cooking or lying in bed just before sleep. That constant planning mode can be empowering, but it can also be exhausting if you do not learn to manage it. Over time, I have learned to be more intentional about my time, my energy and my focus.
Positioning VASwoosh® as a strategic operational consultancy
If you are reading this, you probably know that VASwoosh® is not just a virtual assistant brand. It is a strategic operational consultancy that helps busy business owners and teams run their operations more efficiently, not just more quickly.
My background in senior management gave me a deep understanding of how businesses are run, how decisions are made and how systems can be optimised. Three years in business have given me the freedom to apply that experience directly where it is needed most. I support entrepreneurs and teams who want to work smarter, not harder.

Rethinking work life balance as a business owner

The idea of a clean work life balance is different when you run your own company. In a corporate leadership role, there is still a sense that the organisation owns the time between 9 and 5. In business ownership, you are the one designing your own days. That can be freeing, but it also means you have to be intentional about boundaries.
Over time, I have learned to plan my work around my goals, not just my calendar. I protect my family time, my rest time and my focus time. But the reality is that the business is always somewhere in my mind, even when I am not actively working.

What three years has taught me about leadership and myself

Three years of running VASwoosh® has taught me that I am more resilient, more strategic and more capable than I ever imagined. It has also shown me that leadership is not just about being in a formal role. It is about owning your decisions, standing by your boundaries and creating something that reflects your values.
If you are thinking about stepping out on your own or moving into a more strategic role, the truth is this. It will feel liberating, challenging, uncomfortable and empowering all at once. It will not be as simple as changing your job title. It will be about changing how you think, how you plan and how you lead your own business.
